Location.... Phuket
Thailand's "Pearl of the South" is set 862 kilometres south of Bangkok in the Andaman Sea, off the Kingdom's west coast.

Year-round attractions.
Phuket makes an ideal holiday destination any time of the year. Thailand's largest island is protected from the October - May winter season, offering six months of benign sea conditions and consistently fine weather. In the May - October summer season, Phuket is sometimes exposed to heavy swells, squalls and frequent rains from the southwest. A mini-winter season generally appears in June and July, however, and there's plenty of sun and calm seas through the season. Spectacular Phang Nga Bay, to the delight of sailors and sea-canoers, is protected from heavy seas all year around.

Easy Access.
Joined to the Thai mainland by the Sarasin Bridge, and accessible by car or bus, Phuket is also linked to the rest of the world by a modern international airport. Direct daily flights to centres such as Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong and Bangkok are bringing an ever-increasing number of Asian visitors, while direct flights or easy connections are available to major cities around Europe, America and Australia. International and domestic telecommunications are excellent.

All the facilities.
One major advantage Phuket offers is its wealth of first-rate facilities, including accommodation ranging from budget bungalows to ultra-luxurious resort hotels; a vast number of land and sea recreations; internationally accredited diving, sailing, and rock climbing instruction; Thai and international dining; entertainment, both traditional and modern; international tournament-standard golf courses; meetings, incentives, convention and exhibition facilities; and much more.

Access to unspoiled natural beauty.
Phuket presents the best of both worlds. As big as Singapore, at 540 square kilometres, it boasts all the comforts and conveniences. But it also makes an excellent base for exploring hundreds of coastal and island getaways where you can have a beach to yourself, with nary a footprint in the sand to disrupt your tropical idyll. Ideally located for sun and sea lovers, there's easy access to several marine national parks, including the world-famous Koh Phi Phi and Koh Similan, a legendary scuba-diving destination. On Phuket itself, Khao Phra Thaew, the last significant area of virgin forest, still supports gibbons and other exotic wildlife. Khao Sok National Park, a potential World Heritage Site on the neighbouring mainland, also has tigers and elephants. In all, 48 mammal and 184 bird species have so far been identified locally. Many more reptile, amphibian, insect and plant species make their homes here. Try boating on the park's enormous, astonishingly scenic lake. Go sailing amid the scores of dramatic limestone towers set in Phang Nga Bay.

Something for everyone.
From shopping for local pearls and handicrafts to golf to scuba diving to gamefishing to fun parks, Phuket has something for everyone. From being largely a single travellers' destination, 20 years ago, the island has evolved into a world leader as a seaside resort for couples and families as well, with plenty of activities for children.

Warm welcome, great service, excellent security.
Phuket's only real competitor in Asia is Bali. But Phuket and the rest of Thailand enjoys long-term political stability. The Thais, moreover, are renowned for the quality and warmth of their service.

Fascinating cultural attractions.
Phuket presents a fascinating ethnic mix of Thai, Chinese, Malay, Indian, indigenous sea nomad, and resident expat Westerners. Set among lush tropical greens, you encounter graceful Thai Buddhist temples, gorgeously ornate Chinese temples, mosques, spirit houses, and fishermen's animist shrines. Phuket Town also has many magnificent examples of Sino-Portuguese colonial-style architecture. Thais tend to celebrate festivals at every opportunity, and, given its rich cultural heritage, Phuket offers more occasions for fun than most provinces.

Some visitors come to stay
Phuket is attracting ever-growing numbers of upmarket foreign homebuilders. These villas, and many of the local resorts, present appealing blends of traditional Thai motifs and the best of modern design.
